Pamukkale is a natural wonder, unique in its genre. Fascinating limestone formations have been built by rivers that flow for millions of years on these elevations.
The name Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) refers to terraces resembling brilliant waterfalls, which rise in the form of semicircular fountains of various sizes, located one above each other. Imagine a foamy waterfall that suddenly petrifies and where water turns into rock, as white as snow. The spectacular view, produces the effect of a lunar landscape, due to the travertine formations, which constitutes the different characteristic of Pamukkale.
The terraces was formed by sources of running water at 95 F (35 ºC), covered by a thick layer of lime. The formations cover an area of 3000 m wide by 100 m high. According to scientists, the formation of terraces began 14 thousand years ago.
Pamukkale is a very touristic place, due to the belief in the healing and therapeutic powers of hot springs. The city transformed itself from the center of pagan culture in ancient times into a spa resort today.
